Scientists are a clever breed. Tackling problems. Creating solutions. Increasingly their ideas, research and ambitions are migrating from traditional conventional industries such as pharmaceuticals to the clean technology industry. Biotechnology companies quite often fit the mould of 'solution in need of a problem'. For them, the suite of emerging clean technology and climate change issues represent a new breed of problems that need fixed. Biotechnology is gaining increasing commercial validation. For example, in agriculture then biotechnology advances have increased crop yields, targeted chemical attributes of crop output (low-fat omega oils, biofuels), reduced need for pesticides and water. The related biotechnology is therefore enhancing the product, lowering its cost, or improving the environmental footprint. |
