Wind has traditionally turned turbines to mill flour. But power production now dominates the functionality of wind turbines. So much so that wind power has the largest and fastest-growing generating capacity (excluding large hydro power) within clean energy.
For farmers, wind turbines can generate significant income from a small area of land. Wind farms are modular so can be installed and expanded on a piecemeal basis.
Wind power production has become cost-effective, driven by several factors: |
Did you know?■ 94GW total wind capacity ■ $50bn invested globally in wind during 2007 ■ 15GW+ wind power in Germany, US and Spain ■ 20% power in Denmark generated from wind ■ $6bn of wind turbines sold by GE in 2008 ■ Horizontal turbines can be installed on rooftops | |
